Volume six of Hyperion's superb Romantic Cello Concerto series features German virtuoso Alban Gerhardt. Vieuxtemps and Ysaÿe are best known for their pyrotechnic compositions for the violin, but each also wrote two works for cello and orchestra. Little-known today, they are nothing short of a revelation. The two Vieuxtemps concertos contain all the elements familiar from their famous violin counterparts. The Ysaÿe works are shorter and make ideal companions. Gerhardt rises to the formidable challenges presented by these composers. Sympathetic orchestral support comes from the Royal Flemish Philharmonic led by Josep Caballé-Domenech.
